When fear screams out its savage refrain
Is it any wonder that our pain
Grows deeper and wider
Carving out fissures in our soul
Where no true love can grow
And when it takes root
So deeply in our heart and soul
It tears us so far from love
Keeping us apart
From all the new things life has
In store for us
Stealing serenity
Telling us there is only lack
Rather than plenty
Barricading our hearts
Behind all those defences
Erecting fences
And a hundred tests others must pass
Before they prove themselves
But what if the gift of love
Its right in front of us
Only waiting for us
To open the packaging
Unwrapping our layers
Or burning them up
With a lively spark that just longs
To light up all of the darkness
In our aching hearts?
A lot of internal emotions throughout the poem, and yes we set up our own barriers, and then life has already created lots of hurdles to overcome as well. I wrote a poem a many years ago, not long after the last time I had a stroke. It’s about trying to overcome life’s huge obstacles.

A Beautiful poem. Opening to love when we may have been hurt or abandoned it’s not easy, but necessary. Much love to you in the new year!! ~ Bernice
