We were just two kids trying to survive
And come fully alive
Within this place of repression
Where every burst of joy was beaten down
And initiative was met with a frown
And the wrath of Cain
Teaching children to fear not love
Heaven’s above
Isn’t that the way that hell is made
Paved all along the path with
“the best of intentions?”
Leading the vanquished to an early grave
Or setting the living soul suspended
Inside a prison of aspic
So now if moving bodies quake
With the echoes of how frightening it felt
To reach for life
Who will be the first to show
The necessary mercy
You are no longer enemy
But friend
But never the less
Your solemn gaze
So often makes my heart arrest
And so I am learning
To look somewhere else
We are not longer those two lost children
Caught up within all of the confusion
Dancing as fast as we could
To not be erased
By Medusa’s gaze
That oh so often turned
The errant soul
To stone
We must be careful of what we wish for
A wind change may to our dreams to stone
