In your eyes

In your eyes I saw myself

And as I wept

I realised so many essential things

Of how it felt to be a child

Innocent and carefree

But confined to a cage

And sadly too I saw the wounds I gave

That came out of the pain

Of my own unlived life as a child

Who always had to be good

And now I know why it is

That I feel such joy

As I watch you run through long grass

With your ears flying

Sporting that happy smile

In the way you do

And inside that tender moment

This afternoon

I wished to make amends

For all of those things

I did

When you were just being you

Trying your best to make sense of a human world

At times so terribly mixed up

And confused

So often out of step

With pure instinct
