Why do empathic sensitives often pick up negative emotions? : a perspective and guided imagery from Kyra Mesich

The following excerpt comes from Kyra Mesich’s book Strength in Sensitivity and answers a question may sensitives ask or that we may have been told : “Do empathic people tend to focus on the negative?”

I know it sometimes seems that way when we feel overwhelmed with painful emotions or uncomfortable physical reactions (very common for empathic sensitives).  But the answer is no, it’s not that we are focusing on the negative.  In regard to our empathic ability, I know it sometimes seems like we only notice the negative, painful emotions emanating from others…..

we do also sense people’s positive emotions, but sadly, in most situations there simply are more negative emotions present.  People at work, school, shopping, or driving are stressed, worried, and preoccupied with their own problems  There just is a lot of unhappiness out there, and that is no reflection upon us as sensitives, empathic people that we seem to feel that more often.

But the other answer has to do with what I call empathic distortion.  We grew up in a world that never told us anything about the existence of empathic ability. We had no way of to know about it, much less know how to listen to it or use it.  The complete neglect of that metaphysical, quantum aspect of who we are leads to distortion. Just think if you were given a saxophone with no lessons and no permission to even read about how the parts of the instrument worked.  Your recital would sound pretty distorted as you tried your best to make it work.

Our empathic instrument gets distorted from lack of information and overuse, in a sense.  It just keeps working and becomes louder and louder until we finally pay attention to it. Think about what you hear from speakers when the volume is turned up way too loud.  All you hear are distorted tones.  The pleasantries of the music are lost.  And so it can happen with an empathic sense that is trying to be heard.  The empathic distortion smooths out with the use of flower essence and with the acknowledgement that we will listen to what our empathic sensitivity is trying to tell us.

Kyra then gives the following guided meditation which you can also find in audio file format at http://www.drkyra.co concentrating on the solar plexus centre located below your chest, above the belly, just inside our body there… “an intricate network of nerves that radiates out and connects to every internal organ in your body.”

Imagine for a moment.. a complex network of ganglia and nerves starts there and radiates out to all your major organs.

Now let that image morph.  The radiating nerves turn into the rays of a sun.  See a bright, glowing sun right there in your solar plexus.  Feel the warmth of your sun and its movement as it glows.  Notice the colours of your sun, which may be golden or orange but any colour that occurs to you is just right.   As you tune into your sun you may even hear sounds or feel sensations.  Everything you notice about your solar plexus sun is right for you.

This sun represents your empathic ability.  This is a location in your body where you can connect with your empathic sense.  Notice again the warmth, the heat, and the bright power of your sun.  Feel fully connected to your internal sun.  Connect with your sun.  Connect within and know that this is the place where you can communicate with your empathic sense.  Again, seeing the bright light, feeling the heat, and sensing the movement as your sun glows.

Fully anchored to this sun, ask it, What do I need to know about my empathic ability?  Anything that occurs to you is just right.  You may see a response, hear a reply or just feel a slight change.  Anything you sense is perfect.  What do I need to know about my empathic sense?  Just notice….

And now begin turning your attention back to your body.  You can leave the glowing sun in place right where it is if you want.  Turn your attention back to the chair where you are sitting (or the floor, bed or ground where you are lying), and to the sounds in the room around you. Take in a deep, energising breath.  Stretch and move your body a bit, and if you haven’t already open your eyes.

"The religious naturalist is provisioned with tales of natural emergence that are, to my mind, far more magical than traditional miracles. Emergence is inherent in everything that is alive, allowing our yearning for supernatural miracles to be subsumed by our joy in the countless miracles that surround us." 1. It is incredibly difficult for me to block out negative emotions, altercations, raised voices, loud noises, etc. I have a great appreciation of quiet and peace, the gentle murmur of conversation… just washes over me.
