I have heard it said that both creativity and passion cannot easily co exist beside anxiety. When we find our soul, being and heart energy engaged deeply in creativity and beauty is hard to feel so badly done by, although deeply sensitive individuals do at times find beauty painful if it touches a vulnerable part of us, feasting on beauty can remind us of the goodness in this world.
The following reading from Matt Haig’s The Book of Comfort makes sense to me.
One Beautiful Thing
Experience one beautiful thing a day. However small. However trivial. Read a poem. Play a favourite song. Laugh with a friend. Gaze at the sky just before the sun’s final tumble into night. Watch a classic movie. Eat a slice of lemon drizzle cake. Whatever. Just give yourself one simple reminder that the world is full of wonders. Even if we are at a point in life where we can’t appreciate things, it sometimes helps to remember there are things in this world to enjoy (find joy within)….
Joy also fills my heart when I arrange a bunch of flowers or even make an arrangement of flowers picked on a neighborhood jaunt with Jasper into a sweet little vase I gifted myself from our nearest nursery. The sight this week of that blowsy pink camellia and umbellate viburnum blooms was enough to make my heart full of love. Sadness came today with a misunderstanding between a good friend and me but never the less I called to try and make amends. Sometimes our hurt sadly eclipses the understanding of all of the good things that do surround us.
Beauty is fascinating. It seems to hold some power over us. There’s a truth in it, in the sense that when we see it we do feel there is something greater than ourselves. Maybe it even invokes love. It’s a bit mysterious to me, the power it has.
