Human animals feel
And are driven by instinct
Hidden longings
Desire for nurture
A strong will to survive
Even if belied
The human animal
Does not fit ‘nicely’
Into the confining parameters of
Logic and reason
For the human animal
Is a complex and contrary beast
Beset by drives
That long ago became a mystery to
The mind
Not ever set apart from nature
Yet the human being
Longs to rise above it all
To become the
Supreme commander
Feeding on dreams of power
That sometimes become
Ultimately destructive
Nature contains the human animal
Surrounds us and binds us together
In cell
And bone
And skin
And tissue
The human animal is bound to
Both fall and rise
But in the end the power of entropy
Will ensure
The body of the human animal decays
And falls away
So let us hold fast to the soul
That keeps us in tune with all of these
Powerful instinctual drives
Of the human animal
