Busy mind
Not often kind
Telling tales
Trying its goddam best
To tangle my being up
In thoughts of doom
Focusing on all of the ‘mess’
Strewn about the room
(Just signs of life!)
Whips my butt
As it counts the bitter cost
of EVERYTHING!!!
Stupid little chatter box
Can you please
Just put a sock
In it
Truth is
I would rather smile
This time
Thanks so much
For trying to
“Keep me safe”
But I really would rather
Not die
Within this prison
Of misery
When there is joy to be found
In seeking the light
And finding the gifts
That only come to mind
With a mindset of gratitude
Drowns out the sound
Of
The incessant drone
Of your voice
Resounding
All through my mind
Silly little chatter box!
(Post script.: this one was in my drafts folder for months but after posting it and reading it back a moment ago I thought of Russ Harris who does a lot of work with acceptance therapy and derailing the power of negative internal voices.. He says if you can hear a derogatory thing your inner voice says and then imagine it being said in the voice of a favorite cartoon character this may bring a smile to your face as you see how ridiculous the things it is saying really are! Just one of those tips I have picked up along the way for dealing with anxiety!)
