Scalded

Hot words burn your flesh

Coming from a place of abandonment

Deep within a pit of fire that burns

Still smouldering from days gone by

Laying waste to the soft flow

Of love that arose between us

Where does all this rage come from

The anger at your powerlessness and pain that came

When there was no loving hand to hold

And those you loved suffered such torment

Memories arise

At those times

When love seems to have gone away

And you forget that connection

Can and does survive misunderstandings and separations

But these things reminds you so much

Of endings past

That seemed to strip flesh from bone

And then you heart aches

As you lash out at the only one

Who will stand and take the blow

Wondering how it came to this

And praying to God

He will see deeper

To the pain deep inside

Your wounded aching heart and soul

And answer these scalding words

With empathy

With understanding

And with love
