Birthed

We are not born all at once

A vigorous and lively Pegasus birthed fully formed

From the head of Athena

No we are born piece by piece

In subtle increments

As we negotiate all the tangled byways

Which led us to dead ends

Lured as we were by the promise an honor or a prize

That was never meant for us

 

We are born through all of the failures

That lead to a break down

Through all the losses and the betrayals

Which show us hidden parts of a past

We had yet to embody and reintegrate

 

We are born by findimg the courage

To encounter every buried truth

We never had the will to face

 

We are born from every fall that rescues us

From that lofty perch

Where freedoms view obliterates

The human race

And from every  frenzied scramble up a ladder

Set against the wrong wall

 

We are born with each tear drop that we shed

Which shows us the parts of ourselves we had to exorcise

In order to win a love that had no ultimate value

But instead left us emptied and hollowed out

And torn apart

Fraying at the seams

 

We are born through every agonising scream

That awakens from deep within the centre

Of all that was most exiled in us

Reminding us

That without that Self we lost the way home  to

We founder

And the hard path to find it

Must be discovered and travelled

 

For without that journey

Life will never bring us

Anything of any true value

Or lasting worth
