What we can never do is change the story that has made us what we are. It’s a story completely dictated by the accumulation of life’s manifold complexities – the capacity for astonishment and horror, for sanguinity and hopelessness, for lucid light and the most profound darkness. We are what has happened to us. And we carry everywhere all that has shaped us- all that we lacked, all that we wanted but never got, all that we got but never wanted, and all that was found and lost. So we can ever really close the door on what haunts us.
The Moment
Douglas Kennedy
I think there must be a way to leave the door ajar, but not be flooding by the tide of the past as we rewrite our story for the present and future (I just can’t say it as eloquently as this quote!) x

He is a wonderful writer, Caz. I do believe the past shapes us and we do have power over how we react, for example we can explore it and feel even the painful past rather than try to run or shut the door on it. We can try to find the gift or learning or lesson or rail against what we feel is an unfair fate. We may stay angry for years. Each journey is different. But I dont think we can ever fully close the door on our past and not be affected on some deeper level. ❤
