As deeply unconscious and long suppressed memories start surfacing, we may feel resistance to every aspect of this experience. When this happens, we don’t allow ourselves to become concerned. We have spent much of our time keeping these unintegrated conditions hidden from our awareness. By entering this process, we intend them to surface because we are now equipped to consciously integrate them. However, as they surface our programmed instincts lead us to believe that what;s happening to us is wrong, uncomfortable, or to be feared, and that it means we are ‘out of control’. This is the voice of the mental body (or inner critic). Naturally as this occurs, we feel resistance toward whatever is facilitating this change of circumstance. We therefore feel resistance towards (being fully present for ourselves). Instead of reacting by backing away from commitment, we embrace these emotional states of resistance as positive indicators that the process is having a causal impact. Through perseverance, we break through to the other side of the resistance and feel the release of this unconsciousness. The way out is through.
